Mail box & offshore hosting
Mark Eagle, Idaho - I think was asking about offshore hosting. I have used panamahosting.com for several years and have had no problems. I paid them via western union and falsified all information like address, name and phone number(s)- that info was used to list the owner of the website which can be looked up using whois. I must mention that I was running a legal business but wanted another layer of privacy that offshore adds and did not want the site to be subjected to any frivolous lawsuits.

I saw this 2 years ago on this site about getting another mail address. I setup a mail box in a busy industrial area that had a row of mailboxes. Doing this as an experiment, I wanted to see if it raised any attention from postal people. 2 years later it is still there. I use it every once and a while. I do not think I have to mention this but I will anyway that I use it for legal and legitimate purposes. Hope this helps.

just wanted to thank you
I picked up HTBI a few years back and was pretty captivated by what you were teaching. I implemented a lot of it and reached a pretty decent level of invisibility.

Then, I had a crazy turn of circumstances after returning from an international school in Europe. Some members of a notorious criminal organization were convinced I stole from them and had fled the country only to come home after a few months. My only connection with these people is I knew one of their girlfriend's from high school and had spent some time with her before she ventured over to the wrong side of the tracks.

Three of them attacked me in a bar and I bloodied up one of them pretty good, only to find out later he was the head of the gang for my region (I don't think they expected me to fight back). After that, they were threatening to kill me if I didn't pay them money--an amount which I didn't have and was in no way about to pay anyways. I didn't trust police to protect me from these people.

In one of their texts, they sent me what was supposed to be my address as a scare tactic and it was some random address I had made up at some point.

I know you insist leaving the country isn't necessary in these cases, but in my own case, as an international business student, I always wanted to travel the world anyhow, so I decided to use it as a chance to go live my dreams.

And that's what I've been doing for the past year. My brother dropped me off in a city seven hours from home, and your book was one of the only belongings I took when I handed my cell phone to him and walked off into the world. I knew no one could follow.

I started a business from my computer, and now have a small handful of employees. That's what reminded me of you again. I discovered an employee cheating me and had to let him go.

In this country, putting a hit on someone is pretty cheap, and he proceeded to make threats, though I had remained as polite as possible about the situation. Here we go again...

I knew it was a bluff, but I also felt secure knowing the address he was waving in my face was nonexistent. So once again, your teachings had made me feel safe and secure.

I'd love to see you produce some literature more geared in the international direction at some point, but I know it is a complicated frontier (and unecessary for most). I do realize a lot of the same stuff applies, but I'd love a point in the right direction if you know of any reliable sources.

I want to remind everyone out there that crazy things do happen to normal people. It doesn't hurt to practice a little caution in this world; I know I always will.

I don't live in fear; rather, I feel liberated by the knowledge, skills, and minset I have accumulated to handle anything that happens to me.

Thank you for that!

Legal name change considerations
How not advisable is it to get a legal name change done? I would like to change both my entire name, as I don't care for it. How bad is it to do it in a state/county that requires fingerprints and a background check? How invasive is the background check, just criminal stuff or like your entire life history? It looks like the form requires hardly any information (petition for a name change) so I assume that the courthouse just does it based on your name?

... The requirements probably vary by state. Check with an attorney.

Frequent Flier Mile accounts /# 6484
RE# 6484. JJ You have suggested in HTBI that readers drop all of their Frequent Flier mile accounts entirely ...[etc etc]

... You failed to include an e-mail address so I cannot answer personally. I do not recall ever saying anyone should drop their FF miles. What page in HTBI do you refer to?

Southwest Airlines
This was an official email from Southwest. It was not a phishing scam. The email contained my frequent flier number along with other indicators that this email was in fact from Southwest. The real issue at hand is whether or not this "requirement" is truly a requirement. Please see below for the link from the Southwest website. As of today's date, I don't have emails from any other airline requesting said information. Maybe there are some frequent fliers out there who can contribute to this conversation as well.

Regarding Erica's post, I think it's unlikely that it is genuine. Looks more like phishing email to me. Under no circumstances should people respond to emails of this sort.

Posts 6478 and 6476, Internet Marketer Goes Private
I have purchased from this internet marketer and his partner Ryan Deiss in the past. Good thing I used a prepaid debit card for my purchase because I can stop them from billing the prepaid debit card used despite following their instructions for canceling the force continuity subscription per their instructions and later sending at least a dozen letters to their support department. I just checked the balance for the prepaid debit card I used (no money left on the card) and they are still trying to put through monthly charges. I did not complain but I sure someone complained to the FTC. Or, someone made real threats on his and his family safety as he claimed in other posts.

Southwest Airlines
I just received the following email from Southwest Airlines. (I have only flown them one time) Action Required: TSA Changes Require You To Update Your Account

Dear ------: Southwest Airlines has been working in cooperation with the TSA to introduce Secure Flight, a federally mandated program designed to help enhance the security of domestic and international commercial air travel through the use of improved watch list* matching

. Southwest Airlines is therefore required to collect additional Secure Flight Passenger Data, which includes:

Your full name, exactly as it appears on the current (non-expired) government-issued photo ID that you will be traveling with
Date of birth
Gender
The TSA-issued Redress Number** (if applicable)
Update your MySouthwest Account
Now All Southwest Airline Customers are able to update their account information once so that it is compliant with TSA requirements. It is recommended that you do so before your next flight to minimize your chances of being delayed or held in TSA security check-points.

If you have reservations for future travel, and booked without full name, birth date, and gender, there is no need to add this additional information prior to your upcoming trip.

=================
I thought you might find this email interesting. After reading your books (How to Be Invisible and Invisible Money) I'm not quite sure how I feel about this "requirement". It appears rather intrusive; however, I suppose it's supposed to help with air travel security.

... There is no longer any way to legally travel without the goverment knowing who you are. However, as long as you use your passport for ID, they still don't have to know what state you live in, much less your home address or true telephone number. (You can get a free phone number from K7.net.)

If you send any future posts, please add the HTML code for paragraphs. As shown in the instructions it is < p > (without the spaces). You can also use < br > for line breaks.

By way of an update. As things stand now (as of yesterday, actually) part of my mail is being delivered to my home - a few days before the temporary forwarding order is due to expire and some is still being delivered to the P.O.B. I will have to ask about this at my local P. O. I don't want close this e-post without thanking Iris for her kind attention to my question. T.

Re: Internet marketer public / private
The person referenced appears to have been arrested for fraud and plead guilty to the charge.

If you do questionable things, people will come find you. Not exactly a path to privacy.

Where to host an Internet-based business?
What procedures do you recommend for hosting an Internet-based business? Do you suggest using a hosting company outside the US?

If you recommend using hosting companies outside the US, are there particular countries, (or companies) you can recommend? Or do you recommend using US companies?

Can you give us an example of how you would recommend a web-based business arrange hosting, and payment with the hosting company. Thanks very much!

... The simplest solution is to pay extra to whoever sets up your website if he will act as your nominee.

Otherwise, you might try checking on one of the South American countries. A close friend, David, is a web designer who is moving back to Peru in less than two months. I'll ask him to check around down there.

Internet Marketer Goes Private, Public to harsh
This internet marketer has launched a massive media campaign recently, and has quickly recoiled at the perils of being "public". Quite a tale for those who have swallowed the whole twitter, facebook, youtube, social media thing. Read the whole post, his blog is below.

Creating a ghost address out of thin air
All,

Has anyone ever purchased a mailbox and added it next to several others, effectively creating a "new" ghost address? I've been thinking about the feasibility of this, and have read before that this is easy to do in a “rural” setting where rows of mailboxes are common. However, I’m thinking that in these rural environments many of the neighbors know each other, and would think it’s suspicious that a new address just popped up. If anything, I think this would be easier to accomplish in an urban setting (maybe a small condo or apartment complex), where neighbors tend to keep to themselves and ignore things like a new mailbox appearing out of nowhere.

Can anyone shed some light on the legality of this, as well?

... I once mentioned this as a possibility but I've since decided it's a poor idea. One of my readers tried this a few years ago and told me it did not work for him. (I don't remember the details.)

Nominee Audit
I've been trying to think of possible nominees. Each time I do, I think about what I'd say if someone asked me to be their nominee. I have this respond echoing through my head. "What if I get audited by the IRS, and they ask if I have any other accounts which are not part of my standard business or personal use?" I'm thinking of the Martha Stewart case and also the Scooter Libby case, as well as this recent terroist plot in NY/COLORADO where each were indicted NOT for doing anything wrong, but for not being forthcoming during the questioning. In the spirit of not lying to the IRS, what would you tell a possible nominee who is asked about this account, under their SSN. Yes, I know it is a "non interest bearing" account, so it is not income. But if I run hundreds of thousands of dollars through the account, I'm not the one who's going to be accountable...the nominee is. This make any sense?

... Report all income on Schedule C (or whatever). If audited, accept this account as your own. You are therefore not lying to the IRS, and neither are you avoiding taxes.

Rental history databases
Can anyone tell me more about these rental history databases? I know several readers have inquired about maintaining privacy while receiving rental income - do any readers know anything about these? What information do they contain? See number seven in this link. (The link contains other valuable database information, as well.)

I have mail going to two places. One is a new post office box. I have given that address to very few and suprisingly; have not been flooded with junk mail. That would lead me to believe that either the post office did not sell or post my info out for the public to see or the junk mail folks haven't gotten me into their system.

The second place I get mail is at my home address (in the works of changing that). I must add that although I have my address on the mail; it gets delivered to my parent's mail box because I took mine down (didn't want folks to have access to my street number). My parents live next door; so that is probably why the mail person just started putting my mail in their box.

So a couple suggestions for you; do you have a neighbor you could see about "sharing" a mail box? If you do get another mailbox, add a name or two of "children" (with different last names) who will get mail there. You wouldn't have ID for a 5 yr old, but it would enable you to get mail to that PO box under different names.

What if this grandmother had followed HTBI?
The law would still be ensnaring others. What do y'all think? Indiana Grandmother arrested for buying cold medicine!!! PROSECUTOR UNRELENTING.

This makes me sick. I'm not trying to argue politics or religion, but just look around and use your common sense, and see if you don't feel like we are in a police state.

From the article, "...a grandmother of triplets who bought one box of Zyrtec-D cold medicine for her husband at a Rockville pharmacy. Less than seven days later, she bought a box of Mucinex-D cold medicine for her adult daughter at a Clinton pharmacy, thereby purchasing 3.6 grams total of pseudoephedrine in a week’s time...When the police came knocking at the door of Harpold’s Parke County residence on July 30, she was arrested on a Vermillion County warrant for a class-C misdemeanor, which carries a sentence of up to 60 days in jail and up to a $500 fine."
